Even the worst scenario at the ZNPP will not threaten the population

Experts of the American Nuclear Society (ANS)

Even the worst scenario of the development of events at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant captured by the Russian military will not pose a radiological danger to the population, according to the American Nuclear Society.

Such came to a conclusion experts of the American Nuclear Society (ANS).

Experts have carefully considered these "worst-case" scenarios, but they do not consider a situation that could lead to radiation-related public health consequences.

"Six reactors at the ZNPP were shut down more than ten months ago and are no longer producing enough heat to cause a rapid radiation release. The nuclear power plant is designed to withstand natural and man-made hazards. Thick reinforced concrete protective structures protect the active areas of the reactors and are designed to protect any radioactive materials from the environment," the organization said in a statement.

In the unlikely event that containment structures are breached, any potential release of radioactive material will be confined to the immediate area surrounding the reactors. In this regard, any comparison of the ZNPP with Chernobyl or Fukushima is inaccurate and misleading."

The American Nuclear Society believes that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA or IAEA) inspectors should be given immediate, unfettered access to all areas of the Russian-occupied nuclear power plant.

The IAEA is the most reliable source of current information about the ZNPP, the company adds.

The American Nuclear Society continues to monitor official statements and "chatter" on social networks regarding the state of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.
