The European Commission is ready to make concessions to Hungary in order to help Ukraine, — The Financial Times

To finalize the aid package for Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros

The European Commission may make concessions to Hungary in order to finalize the aid package for Ukraine in the amount 50 billion euros. About it reports The Financial Times.

The journalists in their article refer to anonymous sources who shared that Brussels continues to try to find a solution to the existing funding problem.

The problem of the Budapest veto is becoming even more urgent, because the US Congress has not made a final decision on further support for Kyiv, and Russia continues to attack peaceful Ukrainian cities with new intensity.

Now the European Commission wants to negotiate with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, so that the help from Europe will be implemented.

Three anonymous officials who are familiar with the situation said that the EU is ready to give Hungary the opportunity in 2025 to stop the agreement on financing Ukraine midway. In return, Viktor Orbán must now give up the veto.

A potential concession from the EU will include a review of the four-year support package next year. Then they will assess whether Ukraine needs the money and whether it has fulfilled the requirements for receiving further assistance.

This gives Budapest the ability to veto its extension in the future.

In addition, the European Commission is ready to conduct an annual audit of aid, which will include a clause on "emergency braking". That is, any country will always be able to bring its concerns about payments to Ukraine to the discussion of the summit of EU leaders. At the same time, Hungary will not have an additional opportunity to veto funding.

In a comment to journalists, the sources answered whether Viktor Orban would agree to such a solution to the problem:

"It's not clear yet, but most likely yes."
