Republican Thomas Massey is calling for the resignation of fellow US House Speaker Mike Johnson over his aid bills for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Massey is not alone in calling for Johnson to resign. About this informed The Wall Street Journal.
Massey is a sharp critic of further aid to Ukraine. On Tuesday, April 16, he announced that he will join Marjorie Taylor Green, who is a Republican congresswoman. She is the one who filed the motion for Johnson's resignation last month, but has not yet tried to get it to a vote.
“I will not be resigning and I think it's an absurd notion that someone could make a motion to resign when we're just trying to do our job. We need firm hands at the wheel. I consider myself a wartime speaker. I didn't expect this path to be easy," — Johnson himself answered the accusations in his direction.
The WSJ noted that the House speaker faces the biggest challenge to his leadership since taking office last fall. A growing number of Republicans are indicating that they are disillusioned with his leadership. Deputies expressed concern about his proposal to adopt four separate bills, combine them and send them to the Senate:
They are also concerned about his proposal to pass four separate bills, combine them and submit to the Senate:
— aid to Ukraine;
— aid to Israel;
— support for Taiwan;
— and a document that will focus on national security priorities and include a proposal to help pay for aid to Ukraine by seizing Russian assets, a plan to provide part of the aid in the form of loans, and new sanctions against Iran after Tehran struck Israel over the weekend.
All of this is proposed by Mike Johnson to be passed through the House of Representatives by the end of this week. However, there were signs that his plans were falling apart, as the deputies did not appreciate his idea.
