Biden is ready to make compromises to ensure the provision of aid to Ukraine, — Reuters

The US House of Representatives plans to finish work by December 14

The administration of US President Joe Biden is ready to make concessions on the issue of strengthening border security in order to ensure the approval of the bill, which, in particular, refers to the provision of new aid to Ukraine and Israel. About this the Reuters with reference to the source.

With just a week to go before the Christmas break, the White House and the U.S. Congress are trying to reach a compromise that would provide military aid to the two allies while cracking down on illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border.

Thus, US President Joe Biden said that he is ready to make significant concessions on border security. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the White House was open, in particular, to raising standards for the initial screening of asylum applicants.

According to the source, the Biden administration is also considering some version of the "safe third country" provision that would deny asylum to migrants passing through another country on their way to the United States.

Another possible point of agreement could be an expansion of the expedited deportation process known as "expedited removal." According to the source, this procedure will apply throughout the country, not just at the border.

At the same time, a bipartisan group of senators trying to reach a deal is also discussing a cap on asylum applications. However, the position of the Biden administration on such a restriction remains unclear.

White House spokesman Angelo Fernandez Hernandez said Biden made it clear that the situation at the border is problematic and that Congress must take action to fix it.

"The president said he is open to a compromise", - he added.

It is noted that the US House of Representatives, led by Republicans, plans to finish its work by December 14, so there is little time left for the adoption of a bill on aid to Ukraine. The Senate, which is headed by the Democratic Party, has similar time frames.

"That being said, the goal seems to be to get a deal done at the highest level and perhaps work on the finer details of the legislative text during the break." writes the agency with reference to sources.
