The WHO has begun monitoring a relatively new variant of the coronavirus

The number of cases of COVID-19 worldwide increased by 80% in one month, WHO

"Globally, in the last 28 days (July 10 to August 6, 2023), there were nearly 1,5 million new cases of COVID-19 and more than 2500 deaths, an 80% increase and a 57% decrease, respectively, compared to with the previous 28 days," the document says.

In total, as of August 6, 2023, there have been more than 769 million confirmed cases and more than 6,9 million deaths from the coronavirus worldwide.

The World Health Organization has started surveillance according to a relatively new variant of the coronavirus. It was named EG.5 "Eris".

Earlier, the WHO warned about the rapid spread of the new version of the omicron strain of the EG.5 "Eris" coronavirus. WHO classified this option as "of interest".

"Eris" has shown increased prevalence and the ability to evade immunity, but there have been no reports of changes in the severity of the disease so far, the WHO says. However, it may cause an increase in incidence and become dominant worldwide.
