People's deputies of Ukraine today renamed the city of Vladimir-Volynsky to Vladimir. This became known during a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada.
348 People's Deputies voted "for" such a decision. Now the residents of the city should prepare for the replacement of plates and road signs.
Deputies of the Volyn City Council addressed the Verkhovna Rada with such a request. Local residents asked local officials about this in order to return the city's historical name. Separate deputies of the city council wanted to name the city "Ladomyr".
Russia has already reacted to the initiative to change the name of the Ukrainian city. Thus, the head of the public relations and media department of the administration of the city of Vladimir Alexander Karpylovych stated that "the city of Vladimir can only be one and it is located in Russia."
It is known that the settlement was called Vladimir until the third partition of Poland in 1795. Then the territory of the Volyn province became part of the Russian Empire. The authorities decided to rename the city Vladimir-Volynsky to distinguish it from the Russian Vladimir-on-Klyazme. Now the People's Deputies returned the historical name to the Ukrainian city.
