The situation at Europe's largest Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is located on the territory occupied by Russian troops, has completely gotten out of control. According to experts, all principles of nuclear safety are currently violated at the NPP, and this threatens the entire European continent with a tragedy worse than Chernobyl.
Mykhailo Pozhivanov, doctor of technical sciences, professor and head of the Odesa city party organization of VO "Batkivshchyna", told "ElitExpert" about the ways to solve this problem.
"The situation around the station is extremely difficult, and the IAEA (International Nuclear Energy Agency) is unlikely to be able to influence it in any way. In addition, it should not be forgotten that the majority of the IAEA's leadership are people controlled by Russia, since its contribution to the maintenance of the organization has always been very large. That's why you shouldn't rely too much on the IAEA," he emphasized.
In addition, even a special UN meeting devoted to this issue could not influence the situation.
"As for the level of protection of the Zaporizhia NPP itself, in general, it provides for emergency situations, but at the same time, the accident at the NPP in Fukushima, Japan, showed that it is impossible to calculate everything, and even more so - war. In addition, after the capture of the station, we do not fully understand what is happening there now."
Currently, due to the threat of disaster, tens of thousands of Ukrainians, who until now remained in the occupied territory for various reasons, are leaving the region en masse. In recent weeks, kilometer-long traffic jams have formed in the direction of the part of the Zaporizhzhia region controlled by Ukraine.
According to Mykhailo Pozhivanov, only an anti-Putin coalition led by the USA, Britain and the European Union can find a solution to this problem.
"This is a threat not only to Ukraine, but also to EU countries and Russia itself. I would very much like to believe that nothing bad will happen, that in this matter there is more blackmail on the part of the Russian Federation than real intentions. But, on the other hand, we understand that anything can be expected from the occupiers, and we must be prepared for the worst scenarios," Mykhailo Pozhivanov emphasized.
