The Ukrainian Navy said that Ukraine is currently opening a humanitarian corridor for ships that have been stuck in Black Sea ports since the beginning of the war. The new route was developed in order to free cargo ships that have been blocked in the ports of Chornomorsk, Odesa and Yuzhny since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
The Naval Forces of Ukraine emphasize that "only vessels whose owners or captains will officially confirm their readiness to work in such conditions" will be allowed through. Sea carriers and insurance companies have already expressed concern about the issue of security in the Black Sea.
Routes for the corridor have already been proposed by Ukraine to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
"The corridor will be very transparent. We will place cameras on the ships and there will be a broadcast to show that this is a purely humanitarian mission and has no military purpose," he told the agency. Reuters spokesman of the Navy of Ukraine Oleg Chalyk.
Russia has not yet commented on Ukraine's initiative, and the UN has reacted very cautiously to the proposed humanitarian corridor.
In particular, UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said: "Safe navigation for merchant shipping was one of the benefits of the Black Sea Initiative that we hope to restore."
