In Ukraine, there will no longer be the concept of an urban-type settlement — instead, there will be settlements. On October 24, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi signedlaw "On de-Sovietization of the procedure for solving certain issues of the administrative-territorial system of Ukraine".
The document proposes to remove the Soviet regulation of issues of administrative and territorial organization, which has been in effect since 1981, to establish clear procedures for classifying settlements into the category of cities, towns and villages.
"After almost three months of delay in the OP, the president nevertheless signed the law No. 8263 "On de-Sovietization of the procedure for solving certain issues of the administrative and territorial system of Ukraine", — posted Zheleznyak
It is also envisaged to consolidate the procedure for naming and renaming settlements, establishing their boundaries.
According to the law, all settlements with compact buildings and a population of more than 10 will have the status of a city. Settlements with manor buildings and a population of more than 000 people will be settlements.
The initiative also abolishes the concept of "urban-type settlement" (cities). In its place, a new concept - "settlement" - is being introduced.
Other settlements existing in Ukraine will have the status of villages.
