The United States extended the temporary protected status for people from Ukraine for another 18 months. About this reports said in a statement from the US Department of Homeland Security.
The decision to extend the program was made on August 18. The Ministry of Internal Security reported that other changes have been made that will allow other citizens of Ukraine to apply for the program. The extension will be valid from October 20 to April 19, 2025.
It is noted that citizens of Ukraine who were in the USA as of August 16, 2023, can also apply for this status.
"Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis require the United States to continue providing protection to Ukrainians who may not be able to influence their own country. We will continue to offer our support to Ukrainians in the form of this form of temporary humanitarian aid," said US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
According to the agency, about 26 refugees will be able to keep TPS through April 19, 2025, if they continue to qualify for TPS, and another 166,7 people will receive it. Such an opportunity was given not only to citizens of Ukraine, but also to stateless persons who lived on its territory.
The ministry also allowed non-immigrant students who came to the U.S. on a student visa and hold Ukrainian citizenship to request permission to work more hours than their visa allows and to reduce their academic load.
The status of "temporarily protected persons" was granted to Ukrainians in April 2022. It allows you to obtain a work permit and a temporary residence permit.
