The issue of high-quality treatment and rehabilitation of wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces and civilians is becoming more and more urgent every day. To discuss and solve problematic issues in the organization of rehabilitation in the south of Ukraine, the conference "Problems and prospects of organizing rehabilitation assistance to veterans of the Armed Forces - REHAB-2024" was held in Odesa.
The main attention of speakers and participants was directed to the topics of providing rehabilitation assistance to victims of war, organization of barrier-free space and inclusion, application of adaptive physical culture and sports, psychological rehabilitation and employment of persons with disabilities.
Professional doctors, representatives of local authorities, teachers of educational institutions that train relevant specialists and representatives of businesses that help rehabilitation centers took part in the event.
Today, there are several main problems in the organization of rehabilitation for soldiers with injuries: lack of a sufficient number of rehabilitation centers, lack of specialized medical specialists, insufficient funding from the state in this direction and the issue of further employment and socialization of soldiers with serious injuries.
"There is a problem with the appropriate specialists for the region's medical institutions, there is not enough available base. For our part, we have invested in the budget for the equipment of the necessary departments, but this issue needs to be worked out systematically, at the level of ministries and educational institutions, in order to train new specialists taking into account current needs and, in parallel, to prepare the appropriate material base in hospitals." — Oleksandr Kurmyshov, director of the Department of Health Protection of Odesa Regional State Administration, said during the speech.
Heads of medical facilities, which are already engaged in rehabilitation, spoke about their experience in this direction.
"High-tech rehabilitation measures are what each cluster hospital can organize. We already have a burn unit, a polytrauma unit, a stroke unit with an acute rehabilitation ward for the initial period. However, the issue of training and retraining of specialists is extremely important today and requires a comprehensive approach. Also, the NHZU packages, which are used specifically for rehabilitation, need to be reformed." — said the director of Odesa City Clinical Hospital No. 10, Denys Cebov.
The issue of insufficient financing of hospitals was raised by many conference participants. Present at the event, the head of the Southern Department of the NHSHU, Denys Chornyi, noted that the National Health Service is working with an electronic system and sees the need for both equipment and an increase in the number of rehabilitation cycles.
"Regarding the creation of additional NSZU packages - the issue is being worked out at the level of the Cabinet of Ministers, expert groups and international organizations", — noted Denys Chornyi.
In turn, representatives of educational institutions spoke about the situation with the training of specialized specialists today and the development of new programs specifically for rehabilitation doctors.
Head of the Department of Sports Medicine, Physical Rehabilitation and Physical Education of ONMedU Olha Yushkovska, who also heads NGO "Association of Rehabilitation Management" who organized this conference, spoke about specialist training programs at the medical university.
"Today, we work in two directions - an internship for those who have just finished a six-year study and four-month courses for already working doctors. We are constantly updating the program to take into account all the needs of our wounded soldiers." - said Olga Yushkovska.
In addition, Ms. Yushkovska spoke about the rehabilitation work of her public organization
"We have developed a rehabilitation space with appropriate barrier-free requirements, which allows you to conduct sports classes with professional trainers to reveal the potential of your body through an individually selected type of adaptive sport. The second direction is psychological work with mental health, which is carried out by experts in this field. We also work to ensure employment through close interaction with businesses, so that a person can socialize and not feel unnecessary to society." — noted Olga Yushkovska.
The issue of organizing a barrier-free space and employment of persons with disabilities was also discussed with the participation of business representatives.
Head "Space" group of companies Oleksandr Seleznyov, who is a partner of the NGO "Association of Rehabilitation Management", talked about the implementation of rehabilitation centers in residential complexes built by his company and the problems of post-rehabilitation employment.
"According to various studies, the obstacles to employment are the fear of people with injuries that they will be less able to work and less socialized. Therefore, in our centers, specialists work out these issues with the soldiers. We also communicate with various employment companies so that they take into account the special needs of people and expand the terms of employment. The second issue is the scaling of rehabilitation centers in all residential complexes for the convenience of our soldiers and all those who need it." Oleksandr Seleznyov noted.
The importance of the issue of rehabilitation of our soldiers is difficult to overestimate, so we hope that the REHAB-2024 conference will have a continuation in real changes.
