Democratic victory in the Senate. What to expect in Kyiv

Republicans and Democrats have demonstrated agreement on issues of support for Ukraine

Republicans and Democrats have demonstrated agreement on issues of support for Ukraine. However, the differences may not be in what to do in this field, but in how.

The Democratic force of Joe Biden managed to maintain control of the Senate, despite all predictions of the victory of the Republican Party of Donald Trump. At the same time, the votes in the House of Representatives have not yet been counted, but according to the political structure of the United States, the Senate is higher than the House of Representatives. Correspondent.net decided to figure out how the results of the elections in the USA will affect aid to Ukraine.

Election results

To date, the Democratic Party receives 50 seats in the Senate, the Republican Party - 49. The battle in the state of Nevada has become decisive. Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is the first Latina in US history to be elected to the Senate, defeating Republican Adam Laxalt

The only state where the votes have not yet been counted is Georgia, where the second round of elections will be held on December 6. However, even if a Republican candidate wins in Georgia, with an even distribution of votes in the Senate, a tie may be allowed by the US Vice President, Democrat Kamalia Harris.

Victory, despite the low rating

The victory of the Democrats in the Senate is notable because Joe Biden's approval rating before the election fell to 39% and this is happening against the background of the highest level of inflation in the United States in the last 40 years.

In addition, according to the preliminary results of the midterm elections, the Republicans will win the majority in the House of Representatives. American experts point out that this will lead to a lot of problems, because the House of Representatives can block Biden's decision. However, large-scale internal disagreements within the Republican Party will play in his favor.

Will Ukraine's support continue?

Conflicts between Democrats and Republicans are traditional for the USA. But today they are very acute, American experts believe, and point to a close connection between public discontent within the United States and the country's international policy.

"We must treat the American public and our legal representatives as individuals who play a completely legitimate role in foreign policy, and not pretend that we need to listen only to the opinion of the expert community," said Stephen Wertheim, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for Washington.

However, on a number of geopolitical issues, the positions of Republicans and Democrats converge. In particular, both parties demonstrated agreement on military support for Ukraine. However, the differences may not be in what to do in this field, but in how.

"I don't think that the topic of Ukraine in American politics is problematic and capable of dividing society into two camps," Catholic University of Washington history professor Michael Kimmage told DW.

According to him, one should rather fear that Trump's party in the House of Representatives, while continuing to support Kyiv, will start imposing bills on financial and other assistance to Ukraine with other demands on the Democrats. That is, Republicans can use Ukraine for internal political conflicts in the USA.

At the same time, despite the high level of support for Ukraine in the American public, Republicans who adhere to Trump's views may start isolationist policies, emphasizing the fight against record inflation and strengthening the American economy.

"There is a popular opinion in the United States that we need to focus on domestic problems in the country. This is something that Obama has repeatedly said. This is what Donald Trump relied on," Wertheim notes.
