Neither Ukraine nor Russia will be able to win militarily. Therefore, to end the war, diplomacy is needed that will lead to a just peace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated this at press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"Neither side will win this war with weapons on the battlefield. Russia wanted to do it - it couldn't, and it didn't believe in Ukraine, but it proved it and defended its independence. It was very difficult, at a high price - the lives of its soldiers. This suggests that there must be a transition to diplomacy, but it must lead to a just peace." — the head of state emphasized.
Zelenskyy drew attention to the fact that all politicians who are negotiating today or talking about the terms of a ceasefire are forgetting about the return of prisoners.
"Why say these unnecessary words that people should not die, when it is necessary to return thousands of people who are currently in captivity? And if there is really good will to end this war (and I do not believe that Putin wants this), then there will definitely be an exchange of prisoners," — the president drew attention.
Also, according to Zelensky, Ukraine needs to know who will provide it with security guarantees. This is necessary so that a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine does not happen again.
"Today, Europe, the USA, NATO countries could certainly give Ukraine hope, faith, strong security guarantees, faith that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. But we do not hear such support from the USA today. We know that they and several other European partners do not support our membership in NATO. I believe that the great desire of the Russian Federation coincides with this result," he added.
The Head of State emphasized that the only security guarantees remaining are those that provide for a strong Ukrainian army and the sending of peacekeepers to Ukraine from Europe and the United States. We need to talk about a foreign contingent now, as the dynamics of the war have accelerated and diplomacy has accelerated.
Zelensky also clarified that Ukraine will not recognize the territories occupied by Russia at the legal level.
