Ukraine has agreed to the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire across its entire territory. This decision was made to show that Ukraine is ready for peace, Volodymyr Zelensky said at a briefing.
In particular, the head of state was asked whether he was ready to lift martial law during the ceasefire and hold elections. Zelensky noted that now it is necessary to focus on the first steps towards a ceasefire and developing a plan to end the war.
As the president noted, before the meeting of the Ukrainian and US teams in Saudi Arabia, there was talk of offering silence in the air and at sea. But then the American side proposed a different approach.
According to Zelensky, in the middle of the meeting, the Ukrainian team appeared with him, and the American delegation appeared with US President Donald Trump, and raised the question of whether Ukraine was ready to take steps towards silence throughout the territory.
"I have emphasized this repeatedly, none of us trusts the Russians, we have been through it, but we will not play with narratives that we do not want the war to end. I am very serious and it is important for me to end the war, I want the US president to see this, for Europe, everyone to be in an alliance to force the Russian Federation to end the war. Therefore, my reaction was - we are ready for a 30-day silence format in the format that the American side offered us," he explained.
The President added that this is a very important aspect.
"I frankly said that I believe that silence in the sky and at sea is clear for us to monitor. But if it is silence everywhere, understanding who we are dealing with, and having the experience of past years, then technical assistance is needed. Partners assure us of this. And the parties talked about this. This is very important," Zelensky said.
He explained that after such a step, the American proposal, which was on the agenda of the talks in Saudi Arabia yesterday, could be used, namely a 30-day period of silence, and to prepare a full plan for the end of the war. This is a step-by-step plan with security guarantees for Ukraine.
"If all this is done, then after the preparation of this plan, in any case, a phased implementation will lead to the end of the war. After the end of the war, martial law will be lifted, and after the lifting of martial law, elections will be held in accordance with Ukrainian legislation. No one will postpone anything on purpose," - emphasized Zelensky.
