Volodymyr Zelensky hopes to receive from Joe Biden an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO before the US president leaves the White House. As writes Le Monde, it is part of the "plan for victory" that he will present in Washington.
"The Ukrainian president, hoping to speed up the end of the war, seeks to convince the US president to take decisive measures and give Kyiv the opportunity to enter into negotiations from a position of strength." - writes columnist Sylvie Kauffmann.
As the columnist writes, Zelensky does not want any coercive decisions to be imposed on him. In this regard, he developed a "peace plan" and a "victory plan", which he plans to present in Washington to President Joe Biden, the two candidates - Donald Trump and Kamala Harris - and Congress. According to an informed source, the "peace plan" should lead to the restoration of peace. The second plan is aimed at making Ukraine stronger after the peace agreement is reached.
"Since Putin shows no inclination to real negotiations, the goal of establishing peace remains highly speculative. What Zelensky wants from Biden before he leaves the White House in January 2025 is an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO after the war ends. This is one of the key points of the "winning plan", - says the article.
The problem, however, is that Biden, a man of the Cold War, focused on the idea that Ukraine's membership in NATO would lead to World War III. Therefore, his plan is precisely to help Ukraine in a moderate regime to avoid escalation.
"Everything depends on Biden's decision," Zelenskyy said earlier in a comment to Le Monde.
Perhaps, the columnist notes, he was encouraged by White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan's statement that President Biden "is determined to use the four months [remaining in his term] to put Ukraine in the best possible position to win."
