President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is ready to step down as president if it means peace in Ukraine, or in exchange for Ukraine's membership in NATO, said the president at a press conference on February 23.
"If peace is for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, then I'm ready. The second story is that I can exchange it for NATO, if there are such conditions. I'll say right away not to talk about it for a long time."
The president emphasized that he is focused on Ukraine's security "today, not in 20 years" and does not intend to "be in power for a decade."
"That's why this is probably my focus and my cherished dream," - said Zelensky.
Speaking about NATO, he reiterated that membership in the Alliance would be the cheapest option for Ukraine's security guarantees.
"In any case, whether someone wanted it or not, supported this idea or not - this topic is on the table. And this topic will be on the table of security guarantees and negotiations. I don't know how the negotiations will end, but in any format, in any case it will be on the table. We will probably discuss this with our partners. And here it is very important that we all understand that this is not a negotiating table to which Ukraine is invited, it is also our table, because there is a war in Ukraine. We are inviting our European leaders, first of all, because there is a war in Ukraine, and we are an integral part of this continent - Europe, the future of the European Union," - said Zelensky.
He added that Europe and the United States should be at the negotiating table for peace and security guarantees.
"We want to end the war, and the partners want it, and the partners want Russia to be there, and Russia will be there. I really believe that US President Trump wants and will help us end this war, but peace through strength is, first of all, directing our strength towards Russia." – Zelenskyy concluded.
