On September 7, the awarding ceremony of the laureates of the 81st Venice International Film Festival took place. The main award was won by the film about euthanasia by the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar "The room next door".
About the decision of the international jury, which this year was headed by the French actress Isabelle Huppert, reported on the website of the film festival.
The Golden Lion - the main award of the festival - was awarded to the 74-year-old director of the feature film "The Room Next Door", the main themes of which are the climate crisis and euthanasia - ending life in a quick and painless way. British actress Tilda Swinton and American Julianne Moore played the main roles in the film.
According to the plot, the heroine, played by Swinton, is a military correspondent suffering from terminal cancer. A woman turns to her old friend - the character of Julianne Moore - with a request to be by her side when she takes her own life.
According to Pedro Almodovar, for whom The Room Next Door was his English-language debut, the film emphasized the value of life. At the same time, the picture emphasized the need for every person to have the right to choose when to die.
"This is not a political issue, but a human issue," - said the director of the award-winning film.
Pedro also noted the contribution to the victory of Swinton and Moore, whom he thanked for playing the main roles.
"This award really belongs to them, it's a film about two women - Julianna and Tilda." - he explained.
According to the head of the jury, Isabelle Huppert, the film raises important questions without melodramatics.
