They propose to place the charges at a depth of 4 km underwater and 8 km under the seabed. The pressure of the water should absorb the shock wave, and the power of the explosions will ensure rapid destruction of rocks. At the same time, according to the researchers, the level of radiation will be minimal, and the ocean ecosystem will hardly suffer.
The effect of this many explosions is expected to be equivalent to removing 30 years of CO2 emissions. Scientists believe this is necessary to prevent the catastrophic consequences of global warming, such as ocean acidification and the death of coral reefs.
However, despite the assurances of scientists, the issue of the safety of using thermonuclear explosions on such a scale remains open and requires additional study.
