Ukrainian policemen want to be allowed to use stun guns not only for self-defense. The relevant draft law was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. This was reported by the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Bohdan Drapyatyi Facebook.
According to him, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft law developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It provides for the improvement of the legal basis and features of the use of stun guns.
In particular, it is proposed to add three reasons for the use of stun guns:
- upon arrest of a person who is suspected of committing a criminal offense and resists or tries to escape;
- upon arrest of a person physically resisting a police officer;
- upon arrest of a person trying to escape from custody.
Currently, law enforcement officers can use a stun gun only in the case of:
- repelling an attack on a police officer, another person and/or a protected object;
- fending off an animal attack that threatens the life or health of a person or a police officer.
Drapyatyi noted that the use of a stun gun significantly reduces the risk of injury to the offender or death.
The document also proposes to prohibit police officers from using stun guns on the head, neck, and genitals.
