In the United States, the Citizenship and Immigration Services announced the suspension of a program for Ukrainian citizens who are traveling to the United States due to the large-scale aggression of the Russian Federation. This is the United for Ukraine (U4U) program. This was reported by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and "Voice of America«.
The US department said it is “suspending the acceptance of Form I-134A, the online request for support, and the declaration of financial support.” This is explained by the January 20 executive order “Protecting Our Borders.”
It is noted that the acceptance of applications is currently frozen until USCIS reviews all requests that have already been submitted.
On January 20, President Trump signed the “Securing Our Borders” executive order. In it, among other things, the president instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security to adjust asylum programs for people arriving in the United States and to stop asylum programs that are contrary to U.S. policy.
After that, the Council of Ukrainian Christian Churches of Washington State appealed to President Trump to not suspend programs for refugees from Ukraine, including U4U and TPS.
Ukrainian refugees in the USA
According to media reports, as of March 2023, over 4 Ukrainian citizens had arrived in the United States under the U118U program. In addition, about 25 more Ukrainians entered the United States at the beginning of the large-scale Russian invasion in 2022, crossing the border into the United States from Mexico.
Voice of America data indicates that the number of immigrants in the United States over the past few years is “a record in history.” It currently “surpasses the great immigration boom of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”
United for Ukraine program
The United for Ukraine (U4U) program provides an opportunity for Ukrainian citizens and their immediate family members residing outside the United States to come to the United States and temporarily reside in the country for up to 2 years. Ukrainians participating in the U4U program must have a sponsor in the United States who agrees to provide them with financial support during their stay in the United States.
