The authorities of the department of Mertes-et-Moselle in the east of France ordered Ukrainian refugees to leave the provided state housing. It is reported Le Monde.
The local authorities notified the refugees that they must leave their homes until the end of October. This decision was made due to the reduction of budget costs for the maintenance of refugees and with the aim of promoting their integration into the French community.
In total, 1600 Ukrainian refugees live in Mert and Moselle. Approximately 600 of them live in apartments rented with state funds. Most of the refugees are pensioners who are unable to work, so such decisions of the French authorities forced some to return to Ukraine, even to the frontline regions.
However, after the intervention of human rights organizations in the situation, the authorities of the department postponed the eviction until the end of December.
As reported by Ukrainian associations, in other French regions "the transition to another home was organized in advance, smoothly, without significant tension." At the same time, they indicated that it was in the east of France "support through integration was not complete."
At the same time, local housing associations, authors of eviction letters, claim that they are acting at the request of the government.
"All the necessary steps aimed at professional integration and autonomy have not been taken diligently enough to include you in the general integration program in the region," - says the letter signed by the Association for Reception and Social Reintegration of Mert and Moselle.
There, interested persons are also invited to find a personal solution for resettlement: "If this fails, referral to an emergency shelter may be offered, subject to availability."
