Ukrainians in Romania are compensated for housing rent

Ukrainians in Romania

Romania accepts refugees from Ukraine under a simplified procedure. Six centers are open and operating in the country, where refugees can find free housing after arriving in Romania. The centers are located in the cities of Timisoara, Suceava, Tulcea, Maramures, and in the capital, Bucharest. In addition, the 50/20 program is officially operating in Romania, which is aimed at finding housing on long-term terms.

From the first days of the war, Romania began to accept Ukrainian refugees and allowed them to enter the country under simplified conditions. In order for Ukrainians to feel comfortable, the country introduced the 50/20 support program, which covers part of the costs of housing and food.

What is the essence of the 50/20 program in Romania?

Individuals who will host refugees will receive monthly compensation from the state:

• for providing housing - 50 lei per person per day;

• for food - 20 lei per person per day.

Legal entities (for example, hotels) will also receive compensation - 100 lei per person, but no more than 230 lei per room.

The program was introduced to encourage private individuals and businesses to help refugees, and as a result to solve the problem of their resettlement. The 50/20 program is similar to the 40+ program that operated in Poland during the first months of the full-scale invasion.

What are the requirements for refugees from Ukraine under the 50/20 program?

All Ukrainians who came to Romania in search of asylum can submit documents for compensation, receive the status of temporary protection or refugees, not necessarily.

How to apply for the program?

First, refugees need to find a person who will allow them to live in their own apartment. The compensation procedure is prescribed in Decree 15/2022, Article 1, Clause 10:

  • Register refugees at the police station. It is necessary to do this within the first three days of living in the accommodation, and for non-compliance with the deadlines, the owner of the accommodation will be fined - from 100 to 500 lei;
  • Payments are received by the owner or a person who has the right to use the residential premises.
  • Temporary protection status or refugee status is not a necessary requirement. The program can be used by all Ukrainians who arrived in the country in search of asylum, regardless of their status of stay.
  • The appeal is submitted in the first three days of the beginning of the month for the previous month.
  • The relevant administrative body will consider the request within 16 working days.
  • Please note that after registration in the program, representatives of the social service may come to the residence to check the fact of refugees' residence.
  • Payments are made to the applicant's working bank account.

The application in Bucharest should be submitted to the administration of the sector where the residential area is located.

The application can be submitted in two ways: by e-mail online or offline, in the office. Detailed information about the possibility of submitting an application online and office contacts can be found on the official websites of each of the sectors:

 — 1 sector, — 2nd sector, — 3 sector4 sector, — 5 sector, — 6 sector

Information about the necessary documents can also be found on the official website of each sector.
