Ukraine and Sweden are negotiating the provision of Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighters to Kyiv. About this said Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ihor Zhovkva in an interview with the Voice of America.
"This is a topic that the president constantly raises before the leadership of Sweden. And so it was even before Sweden joined NATO. For obvious reasons, they were not ready to make any promises at the time as they were finalizing their membership in the Alliance. Now the country is in NATO, and my president is again communicating with the Prime Minister of Sweden, and our Ministry of Defense - with the relevant authorities in Sweden. These fighters are as good as the F-16 and we are moving in that direction." - explained the official.
It will be recalled that the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Tobias Billström, previously announced that Stockholm did not supply these planes to Kyiv, because the latter concluded that it would be too difficult to implement two fighter systems simultaneously - F-16 and Gripen. He also added that his country remains open to the supply of these aircraft.
As you know, Sweden talked about the possibility of transferring these fighters to Ukraine as early as September 2023.
