Ukraine may not receive EUR 50 billion in aid from the EU, — Financial Times

The members of the European Union are far from reaching an agreement on the allocation of 50 billion euros to Ukraine

Ukraine may not receive a large package of financial assistance of 50 billion euros from the EU countries due to a number of disagreements within the union. It is reported Financial Times.

The article says that disputes within the EU about the allocation of money to Ukraine jeopardize important promises given to Kyiv a few months ago. And this is happening at a time when the flow of financial and military support from the US has effectively stopped due to debates in Congress.

The publication, citing a number of its own sources, indicates that the EU member states are far from reaching an agreement on the allocation of 50 billion euros to Ukraine.

The European Union's efforts to reach a compromise on the allocation of aid to Ukraine are complicated by the victory of the right-wing party in the elections in the Netherlands and the recent decision of a German court to limit government borrowing. Sources also note that active discussions will continue before and during the EU summit, which will take place on December 14-15 in Brussels.

"It is very important that the support for Ukraine continues and that we, the Europeans, play an important role in this," - said the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, in a comment to the publication.

One of the unnamed representatives of the EU also noted that the approval of financial support for Ukraine is a moment of truth.

"If you say you support Ukraine, you will have to take financial responsibility." he emphasized.

However, some EU officials point out that EU budget negotiations have always been and will be difficult, but in this case a compromise is still possible. A revised aid package is expected to be proposed before the summit.

"I think the gloom surrounding this issue is greatly exaggerated. We are not going to allow Ukraine to experience a sovereign default." - said one of the EU officials who participated in the discussion.

A 50 billion euro aid package from the EU

In June, the European Commission proposed to create a special mechanism for Ukraine, according to which grants and loans in the amount of up to 50 billion euros will be provided for the period until 2027. It should replace the current EU support to Ukraine through the Macroeconomic Financial Assistance Program.
