A group of Hungarian judges believes that a new bill initiated by Viktor Orbán's government violates the principles of democracy and the rule of law. It is an attempt by the authorities to restrict the activities of NGOs and media outlets that receive funding from abroad. About this reported the Bloomberg.
As the Hungarian Judges Association stated, the document, which the Hungarian parliament began considering this week, "violates basic democratic norms: the principle of separation of powers, the right to legal certainty and access to justice."
The essence of the bill is to limit the funding of organizations and media that receive funds from abroad. A specially created Office for the Protection of Sovereignty will be created to determine who poses a "threat", the publication indicates.
The statement emphasizes that the law violates not only freedom of association, but also the right to a fair trial. In addition, the judges emphasize that the changes will undermine public trust in the judicial system and threaten the existence of democratic institutions.
"Such legislative changes not only undermine public trust in the judiciary and its effectiveness, but also threaten the stability and existence of the democratic institutional system," – the Association stated.
