A bipartisan coalition in the US Congress appealed to Joe Biden's administration to strengthen sanctions against the Russian oil service industry. They believe that the current measures allow the American company SLB to help Putin's war machine. About this reported the Financial Times.
The US Congress is demanding an explanation from the Treasury Department and the State Department as to why the SLB company delivered $17,5 million worth of equipment to Russia from August to December 2023, despite sanctions.
Lawmakers point out that SLB, the world's largest oil services company, helps fund Russia's military and are demanding tougher sanctions to limit Putin's income.
"We urge you to continue to support our Ukrainian allies by imposing tougher oil sanctions to effectively limit Putin's profits." said a letter signed by more than 50 members of Congress and addressed to Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
The U.S. Treasury Department said it remains "committed to using all of our tools to reduce the Kremlin's revenue and make it more difficult for the Russian war machine."
"American firms are prohibited from making any new investments in Russia, and we plan to apply all of our sanctions against companies under our jurisdiction." - said the Ministry of Finance.
