Large-scale protests erupt in the US over immigration raids

Trump deploys 2000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles

Mass protests over immigration policy are ongoing in Los Angeles, and President Donald Trump has deployed National Guard troops to the city.

This week, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested scores of people on suspicion of immigration violations, including in Los Angeles. The city has been rocked by violent riots. Police have used tear gas, stun grenades, and pepper spray. Protesters have pelted police cars with rocks and concrete blocks.

As a result, US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to restore order in Los Angeles. According to a White House statement, at least 2000 National Guard troops will be deployed “for 60 days or at the discretion of the Secretary of Defense.”

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is also considering the possibility of involving the US Marine Corps to support the police.

With CNN notes, that Trump's decision is quite unusual, because in the United States control of the National Guard usually lies with state governments. It is the first time that a president has used such power since the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, which were triggered by the acquittal of four white police officers who beat black motorist Rodney King.

Trump also reportedly praised National Guard troops early Sunday morning.

"Excellent work by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and riots," — the president wrote in a message on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass denied reports of the National Guard being deployed in the city. "To be clear: The National Guard has not been deployed to the city of Los Angeles," she wrote shortly after Trump's announcement.

Trump also said he would ban protesters from wearing masks after two days of riots in Los Angeles.

"MASKS ARE NOT ALLOWED to be worn at protests. What do these people have to hide and why???" — the president wrote on Truth Social.
