US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, that the US supports the Ukrainian Peace Summit and wants it to be successful, but it is difficult to see how China can play a useful diplomatic role at this time.
“I'll just say that when it comes to the peace summit — I'll speak for the United States — we support the peace summit. We want it to be successful, and that's why you see the Vice President of the United States at this summit. We support Ukraine's diplomatic efforts." he said at the briefing, commenting on the criticism of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi against China.
According to Miller, the US has always been clear that China can play a useful diplomatic role in resolving this conflict if it wants to.
"But it's hard to see how he can play that role right now, given the moves we've seen in recent months to rebuild Russia's defense and industrial base by China.", he added.
The spokesman said the US will continue to make clear to China that it opposes these actions and will hold those responsible accountable.
The global peace summit in Switzerland at the level of country leaders will be held on June 15-16. As of June 3, 107 countries have confirmed their participation in the summit, the Office of the President reported.
Russia will not be present at the meeting. The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, allowed Russia to participate in the peace summit, but not in the first inaugural meeting at the level of leaders, but in subsequent ones. At the same time, the Swiss Foreign Ministry stated that the peace process is "unthinkable" without the Russian Federation.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister George Maloney, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders are expected to attend the summit.
