Britain plans to shorten refugee stay periods: what's happening

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will next week unveil sweeping changes to the asylum system, including proposals to limit the length of time refugees can stay in the country. Bloomberg.

Mahmud is expected to promise to “do whatever it takes” to regain control of Britain’s borders.

Also, according to Bloomberg sources, the minister is expected to call the tens of thousands of illegal migrants who cross the English Channel each year, or people who overstay their visas, "criminals who abuse the system."

It is noted that since the Labor Party came to power, the Home Office has deported or expelled almost 50 illegal immigrants, which is 23% more than in the previous 16 months.

However, the British Home Secretary wants to make it clearer to those arriving from safe countries, such as France, that they should not travel.

Sources close to Mahmud said the Home Office would be looking more closely at countries such as Denmark, where the number of asylum seekers has fallen after it became more difficult for them to obtain legal residency.

According to the publication's sources, a group of officials visited Copenhagen last week to familiarize themselves with the Danish approach.

The protection currently granted to refugees on a permanent basis will be limited in time, and their immigration status will be subject to regular review. People will be deported as soon as their country of origin is deemed safe.

Mahmud is expected to say the "crisis" at the border has "spined out of control", putting a strain on communities and being unfair to hard-working, tax-paying Britons.
