The White House has issued a number of criticisms of the work of the Voice of America after it stopped funding it. The administration of Donald Trump has stated that taxpayers will no longer be "on the hook for radical propaganda." This is stated in broker White House.
Trump was presented with a list of complaints against the Voice of America, using quotes from various media outlets that accuse the broadcaster of violating journalistic standards and constantly avoiding responsibility.
The White House also noted that several Voice of America reporters posted anti-Trump comments on their professional Twitter accounts, despite their policy of impartiality.
Among the comments made about the broadcaster to Trump:
- In October 2020, Voice of America wrote about a possible Russian role in the scandal involving the laptop of former US President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, which the Trump administration perceived as an attempt to "hide the truth."
- In September 2019, the Daily Caller reported that Voice of America had hired a Russian anti-American propagandist.
- In May 2019, Voice of America fired reporters for their role in canceling a broadcast mid-air after pressure from the Chinese government.
- In March 2019, Voice of America aired a story about transgender migrants seeking asylum in the United States.
- Voice of America management has asked employees not to refer to Hamas and its members as terrorists, "except when quoting official statements."
As a reminder, the day before, US President Trump signed an executive order to reduce the size of seven federal agencies. In particular, the US Agency for Global Media, which oversees Radio Liberty and Voice of America, will be reduced.
The US government has reportedly stopped funding Radio Liberty, and Voice of America employees have been placed on leave.
