US President Donald Trump believes that elections should be held in Ukraine, hinting at the alleged lack of democracy due to their postponement during a full-scale war. This is reported by Politico.
When asked by a journalist whether he thought it was time to hold elections in Ukraine, the head of the White House answered in the affirmative.
"Yes. I think so. It's been a long time... Things haven't been going very well. Yes, I think it's time. I think it's an important time to have an election," — said the US president.
He also said that in Ukraine, "the war is being used" allegedly to prevent elections from being held.
"They are using the war to not hold elections, but I think the Ukrainian people should have that choice. And maybe Zelensky would win. I don't know who would win. But they haven't had elections in a long time. You know, they talk about democracy, but it gets to the point where it's not democracy anymore," Trump said.
Elections in Ukraine
Holding early presidential and parliamentary elections during martial law in Ukraine is theoretically possible, but organizing voting under such conditions carries serious risks for political stability. The biggest threat is the lack of guarantees of voter safety due to constant shelling throughout the country.
Recall that on October 26, regular local elections were to be held in Ukraine, but due to martial law, their holding became impossible.
