US President Donald Trump's speech to a joint session of Congress, which began on the morning of March 5 (Kyiv time), lasted almost two hours. The issue of the Russian-Ukrainian war was raised only at the end of the speech.
Trump's main statements during his speech to Congress.
About Ukraine, and possible peace with Russia
Trump mentioned Ukraine very briefly in his speech, in particular, he did not comment at all on the suspension of American aid to Ukraine. The US president also did not give any details about his "peace plan" for Ukraine.
Here are a number of theses voiced by the US president regarding the Russian Federation's war with Ukraine and possible peace negotiations.
- "Today I received an important letter from (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelensky that Ukraine is ready to sit at the negotiating table to bring lasting peace closer. I appreciate that he sent this letter," — Trump said.
- The American leader also stated in Congress that "we have had serious conversations with the Russians, we have received serious signals that they are ready for peace... isn't that wonderful?"
- Trump emphasized that if "you want to end the war, you have to talk to both sides."
- The American president said that the United States had sent "hundreds of billions of dollars" to support Ukraine's defense. But he asked congressmen: "Do you want this to last another five years?"
- Trump also said again that "millions" of Russians and Ukrainians have already died in the war.
Trump lists his achievements in Congress
Trump began his speech to Congress by listing his achievements as President of the United States in the approximately one and a half months since his inauguration on January 20.
- renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf,
- the introduction of English as an official language in the USA,
- ban on remote work for employees,
- deregulation,
- the affirmation of two genders - male and female,
- He counted a sharp reduction in illegal border crossings as a "victory".
At the same time, Republicans interrupted Trump's speech with applause every minute, while representatives of the Democratic Party held signs like "Lies."
During his speech, the US President also announced the capture of one of the terrorists who organized the explosion at Abbey Gate in Afghanistan, which killed 13 US servicemen (the terrorist attack took place on August 26, 2021).
Trump's announced plans
Trump said that the US will soon regain control of the Panama Canal, and that his administration has already begun working on it.
- In an address to the people of Greenland, he stated that "We support your right to determine your future, and if you decide, we will accept you into the United States."
- The US president said the country would increase tariffs on imported goods, and that China, India, and the EU should be prepared for retaliatory tariffs from the US. He added that the new tariffs would take effect on April 2.
- Trump also said that he had signed an executive order introducing the death penalty for the killing of police officers, and asked Congress to approve this as a separate law.
- He said he was planning "historic action to dramatically increase the production of critical minerals and rare earths here in the United States" later this week.
- Trump said he was "fighting every day" to lower prices for consumers despite the start of the trade war, and promised to set tariffs on other countries the same as on the United States.
- The US president also promised to expand energy production.
- Trump called on Congress to allocate funding for the creation of an advanced Golden Dome missile defense system in the United States.
- Reaffirmed intentions to conduct the largest deportation operation in US history.
- And Trump also promised to "plant the American flag on Mars and beyond."
