US President-elect Donald Trump has instructed his aides to arrange a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin after his inauguration. Such a conversation could take place in the coming days. This is reported by CNN.
According to the American broadcaster, the purpose of the conversation between Trump and Putin will be to discuss a possible personal meeting in the coming months.
During it, the US president will try to end Russia's war against Ukraine, informed sources told CNN.
The publication notes that officials from the Trump administration's national security team began working on a phone call with Putin "several weeks ago." It remains unclear whether a date for such a call has been finalized.
American media also recalled that during the presidential campaign, as a candidate, Trump promised to end Russia's war with Ukraine within a day of his inauguration if he won the election.
But later, the US president-elect's team moved the timeline. Currently, there are no clear signals that Russia's large-scale military aggression against Ukraine is coming to an end.
CNN also noted that Trump and his team hope to quickly begin work on a plan to resolve the military conflict, which could be implemented "within the first months of his presidency — including by speaking directly with Putin."
