Trump calls ending the war in Ukraine a priority: special representative goes to Moscow again

USA Putin

The United States is continuing its efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine. This week, Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Russia to negotiate the terms of a ceasefire, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said on briefing.

According to her, US President Trump is actively monitoring the progress of the negotiations and considers ending the war in Ukraine "one of the key priorities."

"Regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war, I was just in the Oval Office with the President and Steve Witkoff, and they wanted everyone to know that negotiations are ongoing," — Levitt said.

The spokeswoman stressed that the negotiation process is “moving in the right direction.” Witkoff is preparing for another visit to Moscow.

"Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will travel to Russia again later this week to continue talks with Vladimir Putin," said the press secretary.

Levitt did not specify when the visit would take place. Commenting on recent statements by Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the possibility of the US withdrawing from the negotiation process in the event of a "negative scenario", the spokeswoman emphasized that Trump is committed to achieving peace:

"He wants this war to end. He wants to stop the killing on both sides. And this is not the first time he has said this. The president is disappointed with the actions of both sides, but at the same time he believes that peace is possible."
