US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that President Donald Trump is ready to tighten economic sanctions against Russia as much as possible in order to force it to engage in peace talks. This is reported by The Times.
According to Bessant, Trump instructed him to prepare US sanctions in case additional pressure on Russia is needed.
He rated the level of sanctions imposed by the administration of Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden, against Moscow as a six out of ten.
"We kept these sanctions in place, and President Trump has instructed me, if necessary, to go ten out of ten to force President Putin to come to the negotiating table," Bessent said.
At the same time, the Minister of Finance noted that he is optimistic, and the US president will be able to convince the head of the Kremlin without additional sanctions.
"However, all options remain open, including maximum energy sanctions against Russia, if necessary," Bessent added.
