The Telegraph: Trump's participation in the negotiations could force Ukraine to cede some territory

The White House made it clear: Donald Trump's participation in peace talks to end the war could cost Ukraine some of its territories. About this writes a columnist for The Telegraph Lisa Hazeldine.

"Currently, Russia is rapidly advancing through the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia regions, and the White House has made it clear that any peace deal brokered by Trump will most likely involve the transfer of these territories to the Kremlin," - says the article.

At the same time, as Hazeldine notes, European leaders are concerned that Trump may try to impose such an agreement without Ukraine's consent.

At the same time, despite numerous assurances from Western allies to support Kyiv "as long as necessary," they have failed to offer any real plan to weaken Putin's negotiating position.

The author notes that some hope for a change in the situation in favor of Kyiv still remains. In particular, Trump promised to provide Ukraine with new military aid — the first since his return to the White House, and also hinted at an “important statement” regarding Russia. However, it is still unclear what exactly, good or bad.

"But even if Trump imposes new tough sanctions and, together with Europe, begins to supply the full range of weapons requested by Ukraine, the question remains: will it not be enough and will it not be too late?" Hazeldine emphasizes.

She also draws attention to a telling fact: during a meeting of the coalition of the willing this week, plans to send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire were postponed indefinitely — as a tacit admission that there is no hope for a ceasefire in the near future.
