Taiwan offered talks to Beijing after Chinese army exercises - media

After the two-day large-scale exercises of the Chinese army around the island, the President of Taiwan Lai Tsinghe offered China negotiations. It was reported on May 26 Reuters.

Speaking at a meeting of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party in the southern city of Tainan, he urged China to "share with Taiwan the heavy responsibility of regional stability." The president "again expressed good will and offered cooperation with China," and said he hoped "to strengthen mutual understanding and reconciliation," the agency quoted a statement issued by the party as saying.

China, which does not recognize Taiwan's independence, held a two-day military exercise near the island on May 23-24. Taiwan's Ministry of Defense reported that the PRC military deployed 62 aircraft and 27 ships, while 47 Chinese aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait.
