They will discuss security guarantees that the continent can offer Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire with Russia

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and more than a dozen other European leaders in London on March 2. They will discuss the security guarantees the continent can offer Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. This is reported by Bloomberg.

The meeting will allow Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron to brief their European allies on their talks in Washington this week with President Donald Trump, during which they sought to persuade him to pledge US military support if Moscow breaches a potential peace deal in the future.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, Starmer has also invited the leaders of Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania to London.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the Presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa, are also expected to attend.

His office added that Starmer will hold separate bilateral meetings with Zelensky and Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Maloni.

The Europeans want Trump to offer American aerial reconnaissance, surveillance, and air cover as a last resort to assist European peacekeeping forces in the event they come under attack from Russian forces after any peace deal is reached.

At a press conference with Starmer in Washington on February 27, Trump refused to provide such a guarantee, although when pressed, he said: “If they need help, I will always be with the British people.

Ahead of the talks, a British official said that even some ambiguity from the United States could be a deterrent, leaving Putin unsure what the United States would do if he attacked European peacekeepers. But the United States and Europe want both sides to make commitments first, which complicates the talks, said the official, who asked not to be named.
