US changes approach to participation in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia — State Department

USA

The US will no longer act as a mediator in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine

The United States will no longer act as a mediator in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine. Both sides must reach an agreement themselves. This was stated by US State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce during briefing.

"The essence of the changes is that we will no longer, at the first call, fly around the world to hold meetings and act as mediators. We are still committed to participation, we are ready to help in any way we can, but now everything depends on the parties to the conflict," — she said.

According to her, there are other regions in the world that need attention.

"The Secretary of State (Marco Rubio, — ed.) has also made it clear: while our style will be different, the method of how we will engage in this process will also change. We will no longer act as a mediator," she added.

Asked whether the US was prepared to impose secondary sanctions against buyers of Russian oil, similar to the measures against Iran, a State Department spokeswoman said that US President Donald Trump "has again expressed his willingness to act in this direction."

"Clearly, we are not going to lift any existing sanctions. The President wants every action we take as a nation to be done through diplomacy — and this reflects his commitment to that approach," she declared.

US Politics

Bruce stated that the idea of the previous US administration was not to talk to Russia for at least three years.

Trump and Rubio's approach is that "you have to talk to people — face to face, one on one."

"I won't speculate on the substance of what President Trump and Putin might discuss. I know that President Trump is doing this for a reason, and that is to end the bloodshed and the carnage," she added.
