The USA and Germany are blocking Ukraine's official request for membership in NATO, — pro reported the Bild with reference to high-ranking officials.
As you know, a country that wants to join the Alliance must formally ask NATO before starting the process. This is exactly what President Volodymyr Zelenskyy planned to do at the summit in Vilnius.
Although years would pass before joining the Alliance due to the war with the Russian Federation and the length of the process, such steps would prove that Ukraine would irreversibly be on the path to NATO. But it is precisely this official request that some important NATO countries want to prevent. First of all, Germany and the USA, "unfortunately, they are coming together here," an informant from Eastern Europe told BILD. In addition, both countries exerted "pressure" on other NATO members to join their position.
One of the diplomats disappointedly told the publication that Berlin and Washington want "a final declaration that hardly goes beyond the one made in Bucharest in 2008."
"NATO welcomes Ukraine's and Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations for NATO membership. We agreed today that these countries will become members of NATO," the final document of the summit said at the time.
However, in contrast to this, there is also a broad alliance regarding Ukraine's accession to NATO. Not only the Baltic countries and Poland, but also Bulgaria, Romania, Sweden, Turkey and France are in favor of Ukraine joining NATO, albeit in the long term.
It is noted that there had to be urgent crisis diplomacy to formulate the request over the weekend. Representatives of the various positions agreed on secret telephone talks and even sent diplomats to reach a common position of the military alliance by Tuesday morning.
"In the worst case, the heads of government should do it themselves on Tuesday," the diplomat said.
According to him, currently "heated negotiations are underway to prevent this," but it is already known that "Ukraine will not leave empty-handed."
Government circles in Berlin told the publication that negotiations on NATO's common position will continue, but the office does not want to officially comment on it yet.
