Officials from the US and the EU began discussing with Ukraine the possibility of holding peace talks with the Russian Federation. About this TV channel NBC News said unnamed current and former high-ranking American officials.
According to the TV channel, these discussions, in particular, discussed what Ukraine might have to give up in order to reach agreements.
In particular, one of such discussions took place last month at the meeting of the Contact Group on Defense of Ukraine in the Rammstein format.
Western allies are concerned that the war has reached a stalemate, as neither Ukraine nor Russia is currently able to change the situation on the battlefield — while Russia's reserves of power, unlike Ukraine's, "seem endless." The fact that there are difficulties with mobilization in Ukraine also causes fear.
According to officials, in Kyiv time left until the end of the year after which there will be increasingly clear calls to start peace talks.
The Biden administration sees no signs of Putin's willingness to negotiate with Ukraine. Western officials say Putin still believes he can "wait it out," or continue fighting until the U.S. and its allies lose domestic support for funding Ukraine, or the fight to supply Kyiv with arms and ammunition becomes too expensive.
Sources of the publication believe that Ukraine would like to get more time to conduct hostilities, especially with the use of new equipment, "but there is a growing feeling that it is already too late and it is time to conclude an agreement."
In order to convince the President of Ukraine Zelenskyi to start negotiations, NATO can offer Ukraine some security guarantees, even without the country's official accession to the alliance. Thus, according to officials, Ukrainians can be sure that Russia will not launch a new invasion.
