The US is ready to support negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, if the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi expresses his willingness to do so. About it at the briefing said US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller
During the briefing, reporters recalled US President-elect Donald Trump's statement about the possibility of ending the war in the "first 24 hours" of his tenure and asked whether Washington would facilitate negotiations if "both sides express a willingness to start them." Miller replied that the country would support it if the president of Ukraine decided to do so.
"This was our policy - our long-standing policy, that it is President Zelenskyy who should decide when the time comes for negotiations. This is not something that we or any other country should be pushing him to do." - said Miller.
According to him, the US will support Zelensky in any process "aimed at ensuring a just and lasting peace."
"But as always - and you can just look at the statements that he (Vladimir Putin - Ed.) continues to make. We have seen no signs that Putin is ready to abandon his goal of continuing to absorb Ukrainian territory." - stressed the representative of the State Department.
In addition, Miller expressed confidence that the Kremlin "Fuhrer" agreed to negotiations under which he would "get everything he wants, and Ukraine will not get anything of what it is entitled to by law."
"But these are not the negotiations in which President Zelensky is interested, and he should not be interested," — emphasized Matthew Miller.
