The State Bureau of Investigation has completed the investigation of the criminal case against serviceman Vitaly Shabunin, who systematically evaded military duty with the assistance of his unit commander. The indictment will be submitted to the court after the defense has familiarized itself with the case materials, reported DBR.
The investigation established that the serviceman, mobilized in 2022, did not appear at the place of duty for a long time, staying in civilian institutions under the guise of business trips. At the same time, he received a monthly cash allowance, causing losses to the state in the amount of more than 224 thousand hryvnias. On July 11, 2025, he was informed of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (evasion of military service). At the same time, the investigation into his use of an AFU vehicle did not reveal grounds for additional charges.
The commander of the military unit, who facilitated the evasion of his subordinate, was also charged under Part 1 of Article 364 (abuse of official position) and Part 5 of Article 27, Part 4 of Article 409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (assistance in evasion of service). During the investigation, the electronic gadgets seized during a search of his residence were returned to the serviceman.
