The European Union must urgently develop a clear roadmap for Ukraine to become a full member of the bloc, a number of countries have warned, amid concerns that Hungary is trying to undermine Kyiv's chances. writes Politico.
In a joint letter seen by the publication, senior officials from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia called on Brussels to develop “concrete proposals on how to decisively advance Ukraine’s accession process.” This comes against the backdrop of growing European support for Ukraine and a deepening rift with the administration of US President Donald Trump.
"Reaffirming our full and unequivocal commitment to the prospect of Ukraine's membership in the EU, we call for the acceleration of the accession process," — the statement says. "The time has come for ambitious and effective decisions in this regard."
Despite the fact that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has publicly expressed the view that Ukraine could become an EU member by 2030, the signatories of the letter are now demanding concrete steps to ensure that this actually happens.
"Ukraine has demonstrated significant progress in reforms - now it is time for us to mobilize efforts to help Ukraine do the same," — stated in the letter.
In particular, Ukraine has to fulfill ambitious political, economic, and legal tasks while simultaneously protecting its territory, critical infrastructure, and civilian population from Russian attacks.
At the same time, as the letter emphasizes, the EU enlargement process should be “predictable and based on its own merits, and bilateral issues that contradict the Union’s overall strategic interests should not be used to block progress, but should be resolved through good faith dialogue.”
