The Russian Federation can remotely detonate the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The occupiers can carry out such an explosion already after the transfer of control over the NPP to Ukraine and the IAEA.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in an interview with Spanish media.
According to him, the occupiers understand that the Ukrainian army does not shoot at the station, and therefore they "cannot just throw it out artificially." In this regard, the aggressor is looking for a "format and moment" for a possible terrorist attack on the ZNPP and the release of radiation.
According to him, there is a threat that the occupiers are technically ready to provoke a local explosion at the station, which could lead to an emission. In particular, the Russians can provoke an explosion and make it appear that they did not do it in order to stop the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces.
"Why? To show that this war is dangerous to the world. To provoke it so that it was not their doing. For the information space, so that people are afraid of this, so that then partners who are skeptics start politically stopping Ukraine, stopping our counter-offensive actions," Zelenskyi said.
Zelensky warned that even if the world community succeeds in influencing Russia to hand over the plant to the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the threats will not disappear.
"At the time of handing over the station, the IAEA needs forces, funds, and people who will inspect the NPP. Because we are sure that they will transmit with mined elements. We know for sure that Russia considered as one of the plans that later, when the station is handed over to us, to detonate remotely for the release," Zelensky emphasized.
The President noted that the Russian Federation is planning to release radiation at the ZNPP in order to stop the advance of the Ukrainian army and the de-occupation of the territories "so that the conflict is frozen."
"This is their main strategic idea. They now need time to strengthen their army with men, weapons. So that later, when they are ready, they will come again, occupy us and kill us, erase us from the earth," Zelenskyy explained.
