Legislators, as well as representatives of the three leading German political parties, decided on the date of extraordinary federal elections. The new date was a compromise between center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz. This is reported Politico.
Federal early elections in Germany will take place on February 23, 2025.
It is assumed that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will win a vote of confidence by the end of December, which will allow new elections to be held in February. Last week, his three-party coalition fell apart after months of growing friction. The main disagreements concerned costs and ways to support the weakened German economy.
Scholz initially said he would hold a confidence vote on January 15, setting new elections by the end of March, while serving as head of a minority government made up of his centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens in the interim. But leaders of other parties, including Friedrich Merz, leader of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), urged Scholz to speed up that timetable, arguing that Germany could not afford a prolonged period of political uncertainty.
Now that the date for the election appears to be set, campaigning must begin in earnest.
