A Russian strike drone with a high-explosive warhead hit the shelter of Unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. No release of radioactive substances into the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was recorded after the Russian drone hit, but if there are repeated strikes, the situation may change. This was stated by the head of the State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone (SAZV) Hryhoriy Ishchenko during a telethon.
"At the moment, the radiation situation is calm, so there can be no emissions, but if there are repeated strikes on such objects, the situation may change," the head of the State Agency for the Protection of the Environment noted.
He emphasized that the situation with the radiation background on the territory of the Chernobyl NPP site, including the New Safe Confinement of the Shelter facility, has remained unchanged since the beginning of the fire, during the liquidation process, and to this day.
"That is, no release of radioactive substances beyond the limits has been established. Personnel exposure above control levels has also not been recorded. Radiation situation parameters within control levels", – emphasized the head of the State Agency for the Protection of the Environment.
According to him, a meeting is planned to be convened on February 18 to assess the damage to the NSC and submit it to the state leadership.
"On February 14, the employees of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant conducted a preliminary inspection, and discovered damaged structures caused by a direct hit from a UAV. The charge was very powerful, and therefore the damage is to the main and load-bearing parts of the building structures," – added Ishchenko.
