The flood in Europe inundates new lands (photo)

The situation is critical

Floods in Central Europe are moving to new territories. It is reported Reuters.

According to the agency, volunteers and emergency workers worked through the night to fortify the Polish city of Wroclaw against the approaching flood waters. At the same time, Hungary opened the dam, as the prime minister warned that a "critical period" was approaching.

The worst floods in 20 years left a trail of destruction from Romania to Poland, spreading mud and debris in cities, destroying bridges, inundating cars and leaving billions of dollars in damage.

"A lot happened tonight. We will need urgent information from those places where high water levels have been recorded," — said Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk at a crisis meeting in Wroclaw.

Queues of people in Wrocław handed over sandbags to strengthen riverbanks and protect buildings. Water levels in this city are expected to peak on Thursday, September 19.

Poland's defense ministry said more than 14 soldiers had been sent to flood-hit regions, with the military using helicopters to evacuate people and strengthen flood defences, while drones monitored the situation from above.

In Hungary, the authorities opened a dam in the northwest of the country to divert water from the Laita River to an emergency reservoir. The level of the Danube in Budapest is expected to reach around 8,5 meters or even higher on Friday or Saturday.

"Due to heavy rains and floods, the situation is critical throughout Central Europe," — said Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban.

In the Czech Republic, meanwhile, water levels are mostly receding, but rivers are still overflowing.
