The suspect in the murder of activist Demyan Hanul has been remanded in custody without bail. This was reported by National Police of Ukraine.
Thus, on March 16, the Kyiv District Court of Odessa chose a preventive measure for the suspect in the form of detention without the right to post bail. He faces life imprisonment.
Investigators of the Investigation Department of the Main Police Department in the Odessa region informed the defendant of suspicion under Clause 11, Part 2, Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — in premeditated murder committed on order, and Part 1, Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — in illegal carrying, storage, and acquisition of firearms and ammunition without a permit provided for by law.
The hearing was partially held in closed session at the request of the prosecutor. This request was supported by the defense and the suspect himself.
It should be noted that at the hearing, suspect Shalaev was wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet. He faces life imprisonment.
In the press service of the 28th separate mechanized brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Crusade responded for the detention of their serviceman, 46-year-old Serhiy Shalaev, who was today charged with the murder of activist Demyan Hanul in Odessa.
"The suspect, Senior Lieutenant Shalaev Serhiy Serhiyovych, was transferred on 13.07.2024/0139/22.02.2025 from military unit AXNUMX, admitted to the reserve officer's training unit of the reserve company. After the transfer, he was almost always undergoing treatment. He was not involved in the area of combat missions. He did not arrive from vacation to the place of service and is considered to be in the SZCH since XNUMX/XNUMX/XNUMX," - noted in the 28th brigade.
