Negotiations in London collapsed: why Rubio canceled the visit and did not come to the meeting in Ukraine

USA

Negotiations on a ceasefire and a general settlement of the war, which were supposed to take place today in London at the level of foreign ministers, have been unexpectedly postponed. It was previously reported that the United States will be represented at negotiations with Ukrainian and European colleagues in London this week on the Russian-Ukrainian war by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump's special representatives Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg.

However, it was announced last night that Rubio would not be attending the meeting. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said the reason was “logistical issues with his schedule.”

However Reuters Citing its sources, it writes that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio fears that Ukraine may return to tougher positions in the negotiations.

"Rubio canceled his trip to London, and a meeting that was also to have included the foreign ministers of Great Britain, Ukraine, France, and Germany was postponed. According to a European official, Rubio expressed concerns that Ukraine could return to its previous hardline stance, which would make any breakthrough in the talks impossible," - writes the publication.

It is noted that most European foreign ministers have refused to participate in the meeting, and now the chances of a breakthrough look slim.

This came despite warnings from US President Donald Trump that Washington could walk away from the talks if progress on a deal was not made soon. On Sunday, Trump said he hoped Moscow and Kyiv would reach a deal this week to end the three-year conflict. However, few diplomats saw that as realistic given the significant issues that still need to be resolved.
